I had a rich discussion with philosopher and cognitive scientist John Vervaeke and his writing partner Christopher Masteropietro about religion for people ‘between worlds’; in other words, for those who can’t accept either traditional religion or mere atheism. We talked about the need for what John has called psycho-technologies, such as meditation and dia-logos. Our central question was: how do we recover the sacred in the age of science, expand the meaning of our rationality, and find meaning in an age of nihilism, fundamentalism, and the meaning crisis? John believes we are on the cusp of a paradigm shift which resembles the axial age. But the ‘two worlds’ mythology of the axial age no longer will satisfy our rationality or religious longing in the quantum and virtual age. This means we live in a time of radical reinvention and rediscovery of meaning.

This was an incredibly valuable discussion with Jim Wasserman – a former business litigation attorney who taught economics and humanities for 20 years. He’s the author of a whole range of books and focuses on consumer economics. Jim’s newest book is “Enough Stuff,” a story about appreciating family and friends during the holidays. We covered basic consumer economics, how to navigate in a world where you are the product and media literacy for a digital paradigm.

In Marshall McLuhan’s thought, the history of the West up to the 20th century was the history of the emergence of the visual, literate outlook, which began in the Greek city states around 500BC. Literacy was the foundation of the large city states and empires, ancient and modern, that followed; as we have seen, justice, machines and progress result from the visual, literary outlook. However, the acoustic outlook continued to exist alongside the literate in all of these entities. This is Owen Cox’ visual presentation on the visionary media shaman, Marshall McLuhan. Owen Cox uses modern art history to explain McLuhan’s theory on acoustic and visual spaces.

While many are looking out on the world and the current state of society and thinking “what on earth is happening?”, people who are familiar with the history of religion and mythology can see clear and predictable patterns emerging. As a result, increasingly, people are flocking to thinkers who are able to bring together an understanding of religion and mythology with contemporary science in a way which is complementary instead of oppositional. This explains the rise of Jordan Peterson and many like him.
In this, the first of a series of conversations on “Understanding Religion for Discernment”, Paul Lloyd Robson and James Kourtides set out on a project of building bridges between a secular worldview and the ancient worldview as presented by the Orthodox faith and mythology in general.

Our current day society says that rituals are a product of superstition and ignorance, and that we as modern humans do not need them. At the same time, all of our lives are full of ritual behaviour.
